DRC Mines Minister Launches Dialogue in Kolwezi to Address Industry Challenges
Congo Mines Minister Visits Kolwezi to Tackle Artisanal Mining, Site Invasions, and Governance Issues
Louis Watum Kabamba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Mines, arrived in Kolwezi, Lualaba Province, on Thursday, September 18, 2025, for an official mission aimed at strengthening dialogue with the mining industry.
The visit seeks to identify and resolve key challenges undermining the sector’s positive impact on local communities and the national economy.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Mines, the Minister’s agenda includes addressing issues such as the management of mining royalties (DOT), the growing invasion of industrial sites by artisanal miners, and the need for stronger oversight of artisanal mining activities. These challenges, the statement emphasized, remain central to ensuring a sustainable and well-regulated mining sector.
During his visit, Minister Watum was welcomed by provincial authorities and accompanied by heads of agencies under his supervision. He first paid a courtesy call on Lualaba Governor Fifi Masuka, underlining the importance of coordination between national and provincial administrations in managing the sector.
The Minister is scheduled to engage in open dialogue with mining operators through the Chamber of Mines, as well as with political leaders, administrative officials, and technical departments.
These discussions are expected to focus on building consensus around responsible mining practices and improving collaboration between stakeholders.
By reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and profitability in mining operations, Watum stressed that the ultimate objective is to ensure the sector contributes more effectively to the well-being of the Congolese population.
